Hauptlinien
Der Königssohn Ludwig VIi. und Eleonore von Aquitanien kennen sich flüchtig schon seit der Kindheit. EJeonores Vater ist der reiche Vasall des Königs Ludwig VI. und besucht ihn vor seiner Wallfahrt im Jahre 1137. Er hat ernste Probleme mit der Gesundheit und bittet den König um den Schutz seiner Tochter durch die Ehe mit dem Prinzen. Der König aber weiß, dass sein Sohn in ein Paar Jahre ältere Matilda von Anjou verliebt ist und ihr versprochen hat, sie zu heiraten. Weil ihm aber der angebotene Zusammenschluss mit Aguitanien sehr gefällt, will er eine möglichst elegante Weise finden, seinen Sohn zu beeinflussen. Am besten sollte sich ein Gespräch mit Abt Octavius, dem geistigen Vater und Religionslehrer vom Prinzen eignen. Ludwig VII. schreibt Matilda gleich einen traurigen Brief. Matilda wendet sich an den Abt Octavius, über den manche wissen, dass er eigentlich der Diener mehr als zweier Herren ist. Sie will, dass er die geplante Heirat zum Scheitern bringt und verspricht ihm für Hilfe Gold und Land. Eleonore soll aber heiraten, wie sein Vater will, d. h. wie es ihrem Land am besten ist. Eleonore hat nichts gegen dies Heirat sie ist jung, schön, mutig, neugierig, ehrgeizig, gut zum Regieren vorbereitet und etwas naiv gleichzeitig. Sie hofft auf Zukunft und Liebe, weil sie Ludwig VII. nicht unattraktiv findet. Und sie ist ihrer Schönheit bewusst ... Dann erfährt aber die Amme irgendwie von Ludwigs Affäre mit Matilda und erzählt davon gleich Eleonore. Eleonore hat es jetzt sehr schwer, weil sie schon die Mitteilung vom Tode ihres Vaters bekommen hat. Sie bricht in Tränen aus. Die Amme tröstet sie und will ihr helfen. Sie weiß auch, dass Matilda und Abt Octavius es so geplant haben, dass vor der Trauung gefragt wird, ob jemand gegen diese Ehe ist und aus welchen Gründen. Dann soll Matilda ihre Aussage machen und gleich an Ort und Stelle mit Ludwig getraut werden. Zusammen planen die Amme und Eleonore die Beseitigung von Matilda und halten sogar den Mord für selbstverständlich. Eleonore ist innerlich sehr belastet. Äußerlich soll sie aber stark sein, weil sie eine Herzogin ist. Sie wirft einen schnellen Blick in den Spiegel, und glaubt da den Geist ihrer Mutter zu sehen, der sie ernst vor dem Mord warnt. Sie erschrickt, aber der Dschinn ist schon aus der Flasche. Ludwig VI. und Eleonore sehen sich einen Tag vor der Trauung. Eleonore macht einen ungelungenen Versuch, Ludwig zu sich zu gewinnen. Die Trauung von Eleonore und Ludwig findet statt, in der Kathedrale sieht man auch die bleiche Matilda, einige dunkle Gestalten drohend dicht hinter ihr stehend.

1136 Das Königsschloss in Paris

Wilhelm X. : Grüß dich, alter Freund, und freue mich, dich zu sehen!
Ludwig VI. : Die Freude ist gegenseitig! Was führt dich hierher?
W: Ich habe eine Sorge: Ich werde bald sterben. Aber ich habe keinen würdigen Nachfolger und deshalb wollte ich, da unsere Kinder heiraten.
L: Hmmm, gern, aber mein Sohn ist in Matilda verliebt. ..
W: Wir können sie doch trennen ...
L: Stimmt, aber wer macht das?
W: Vielleicht Abt Octaviu ')
L: Hmmm, ... Abt Octavius wäre der Richtige! Und mein Sohn wird bald um die Hand deiner Tochter bitten!
Szene Nr. 2 Abt und Matilda (Im Grünen)
Abt (beugt sich): Zu Diensten, gnädige Matilda!
Matilda: Wenn du die Heirat von Ludvig und Eleonore zum Scheitern bringst. wartet eine reichliche Belohnung auf dich.
A: ... Es ist ja eine schwer Aufgabe ... Ich will ja keine Sünde begehen ...
M: Ich kann dir diese Aufgabe erleichtern, ich habe einen Liebesbrief von Ludwig mit dem Gelöbnis mich zu heiraten.
A: Habt Ihr den Brief mit?
M: Ja, hier! (Der Abt liest den Brief)
A: Ja, versprochen ist im Gottes Namen ... doch für einen armen Abt, wie ich, ist es trotzdem kornpliziert..
M: Gold und Ackerland sollst du dafür bekommen!
A: (scheinheilig) Gut, weil Ihr Ludwigja so liebt ...
Szene Nr. 3 Eleonore und die Amme
Das Schloss Poitiers in Aquitanien (Eleonores Kammer)
Amme: (geheimnisvoll) Mein liebes Kind, ich habe eine Neuigkeit.
Eleonore: Etwas Gutes oder wieder etwas Schlechtes?
A: Etwas Wichtiges. Aber setz dich, mein Kind ... Zwischen Ludwig und Matilda ist ein Liebesverhältnis.
E: Waas? (Beginnt zu weinen) Ich habe grade meinen Vater verloren, und jetzt noch das!
A: (tröstend) Mein Kind. es ist ja nicht so schlecht! (ermunternd) Schluss mit den Tränen, Herzogin! Ich habe einen Plan ...
E: (hört zu, ) Ja, Matilda soll verschwinden!
Szene Nr. 4 Eleonore und der Geist
(Eleonores Kammer)
Eleonore: (wirft einen Blick in den großen runden Spiegel) Ach!
Der Geist (verschwommenes Gesicht der Mutter) : Keinen Mord! Keinen! Denk darüber naaaach, Eleonoreee!
E: (sehr erschrocken): Mutter?
G: (verschwindet sich langsam)
E: (sehr bleich) Amme! (Die Amme im Hintergrund)
Szene Nr. 5
Eleonore und Ludwig VI.
(Einen Tag vor der Trauung)
Eleonore: (nähert sich mit weitgestreckten Armen): Ludwig!
Ludwig: (trocken) Nein, Eleonore. Ihr wisst ja, dass diese Heirat nur eine politische Verbindung ist.
E: Für mich ist es aber nicht so. Ich glaube, dass Ihr eines Tages Eure Meinung verändern werdet.
L: Könnt Ihr ewig daran glauben. Ich habe meine Gefühle und mein Gelöbnis vor Matilda und Gott gemacht.
E: Wir werden schon sehen. was uns die Zukunft bringt!

Die Trauung in der Kathedrale

Main lines
The King's son, Louis VII and Eleanor of Aquitaine have known each other for years, but only from the distance. Eleanor's father is a rich Vassall. In 1137 he visits him in the course of a pilgrimage. He suffers from serious health problems and therefore he asks Louis VI to arrange a marriage between Eleanor and Prince Louis. Although the King knows, that his son is in love with Matilda of Anjou, and that he's already promised to marry her, he tries to convince his son. He likes the idea of Louis VII marrying Eleanor, to finally unite his own Kingdom with Aquitaine.
So he arranges a meeting with Priest Octavius, his son's spiritual father and guide. His great influence on Louis forces the young man to immediatley write a sad, long letter to Matilda, explaining her the situation. Matilda refuses to accept his decision. She knows that there are ways to convince Octavius to change his mind, and so she promises him gold and land, provided that he helps her avoiding the marriage between Eleanor and young Louis.
Meanwhile, Eleanor has to face different problems. Her father dies and so she decides to follow his wish to marry Louis VII. She knows that this is for her own good, and for Aquitain's good as well. Deep inside she is curious- she is young, pretty and brave, and she wants zu achieve something in her life. She hopes for love an happiness in the future, as she considers Louis an attractive man.
But when Eleanor's wet nurse tells her about the affair of Matilda an Louis, she starts to cry. Together the two women work out an evil plan- they want to wipe out Matilda, as they fear that this woman would do everything to ruin the marriage between Eleanor and Louis.
Eleanor is torn inside. She doesn't want to kill her rival Matilda, but at the same time she feels deep hatred for her. So she has to make a decision...
When she throws a quick glance at herself in the mirror, she suddenly sees the ghost of her dead mother, trying to warn her about the bloody deed she intends to commit. Eleanor is frightened.
The day before their marriage, Louis and Eleanor meet. Eleanor tries to win him over, but he rejects her approaches in a cold way.
The ceremony takes place, observed by Matilda, who is sorrounded by dark, threatening shapes that are waiting for the right moment to fulfill their cruel mission...
Scene No. 1 Wilhelm X. and Louis VI.
1136 Castle in Paris
(Later Abbot Octavius appears).
Wilhelm X. : Hello, old friend, it's good to see you!
Louis VI. : Welcome! It's good to see you, too. What's the reason for your visit?
W: I'm worried, my dear... I might be dead soon, and I still have not found a dignified successor. That's why I thought that it might be a good option to arrange a marriage between our children.
L: Hmmm, to me this sounds good! But my son is in love with Matilda...he's even promised to marry her!
W: But we could seperate them.
L: True.... but who might be the right person to do this?
W: Might be... Abbot Octaviu !!?
L: Hmmm, that's a good thought! Trust me, soon my son will be the one to ask your daughter's hand in marriage!
Scene No. 2 Octavius and Matilda (walking, outside)
Octavius (bows to Matilde): At your service, merciful Matilda!
Matilda: If you can manage to avoid the marriage between Louis with Eleanor, you will be richly rewarded!
A: Indeed, this is a hard challenge... I don't want to be a sinner...
M: I can make this easier for you. I have a letter of Louis with me, telling me that he wants to marry ME!
A: You brought the letter with you?
M: Yes. (Octavius reads the letter...)
A: Yes, he promised it... in the name of God! But still, it is complicated for me. You have to understand this. I am a poor priest, serving the Almighty.
M: You shall be given gold, you shall be given land!
A: (sighs, sanctimoniously) Well, I agree... because you love Louis that much...
Scene No. 3 Eleanor and her wet nurse
Castle Poitiers in Aquitaine (Eleanor's room)
Wet nurse: My dear child, I have news for you. Sad news, I fear.
Eleonore: Sad news, again?
W: Something important. Sit down, child...I don't know how to say this, so I will just tell you right awag: there's an affair going on between Louis and Matilda.
E: WHAT? (starts to cry) I've just lost my father... and now?
W: (trying to calm her) Dear child, this battle is not lost yet... stop crying. I've got a plan!
E: (bitter) Yes, I'll do whatever it takes... Matilda must disappear!
Scene No. 4 Eleanor and the ghost
(Eleanor's room)
Eleanor: (throwing a glance at the big, round mirror, sighs) Ahhh...
Ghost (= face of her dead mother) : No murder! No murder! No! Think about it, Eleanor, think about it!
E: (very frightened): Mother?
G: (slowly disappears): Don't....
E: (pale) Wet nurse!! (The wet nurse appears)
Scene No. 5
Eleanor and Louis VI.
(One day before the marriage)
Eleanor: (getting closer, with arms wide open): Louis!!
Louis: (cold) No, Eleanor. You know that for me this marriage is only for political reasons.
E: For me it is more than that. I think you will change your mind one day. I am sure about that.
L: Believe whatever you want. I have my feelings, I will always remember the promise I gave to Matilda, and to God.
E: We'll see what future brings...
Scene No. 6
July 25th, 1137
The ceremony in the Cathedral
(Octavius at the ceremony. Louis VI and Eleanor are standing in front of him. In the back you can see Kings and Aristocrats, among them the frightened Matilda, sorrounded by dark, threatening shapes )
