About the project
Why Eleanor of Aquitaine?
Eleanor of Aquitaine (1122-1204) has been considered one of the most ambitious, powerful and influential female leaders in history. Thus, a feminist consideration of Eleanor's contributions to gender emancipation and subsequently gender mainstreaming lies at the core of the project's contextual focus.
The project's target group is composed of teenagers between 14 and 19 years of age - a period of life when information technologies are already approached in a highly gendered way. One of the most central objectives of this project is to call attention to the construction of socio-cultural gender codes and subsequently, to grant virtual space for the participants to negotiate as well as to deconstruct gender stereotypes in order to increase equal opportunities in all areas of life.
Project Objectives
Advancement of student's personality development particularly with regard to the common notion of a democratic Europe where utmost importance is attached to respect to the equality of different cultures and languages
Learning together and from each other instead of supporting the capitalistically motivated greed for individual advantage at the cost of the respective interests of the public
Advancement of soft skills, including communicative competence
Promotion of critical media literacy
Gender Mainstreaming
Project schedule:
STEP 1: Registration Period:
In spring 2008 schools will be invited to participate in the project and register for the following school year.
STEP 2: Group formation process:
At the beginning of the school year 2008/09 the registered schools will form project groups which will be supervised by at least one teacher. Individual group compositions will be arranged and negotiated by students and teachers, although we encourage heterogeneity, especially in terms of age and gender.
A group might work as a research team on certain aspects of Eleanor's life and/or historical contexts (e.g. fashion, Minnesang, the crusades, etc), as artwork designers or as a Blender 3D programming team. According to the schools' study focus (e.g. IT, humanities, fashion design, science, music, etc.) and the group's interests individual group online profiles will be created, including the group's research area. These profiles will then be virtually displayed on the project wikipedia.
This virtual platform serves as the project's interface where research results can be uploaded and room for discussions, online-votes and intercultural exchange is democratically granted to all the participants.
STEP 3: Programming and final mastering:
After a year roughly coinciding with a school year (and the completion of the research, training in Blender 3D programming, the compilation of the project wikipedia and the outline of the final software / game) the last phase of the project will be launched. The results can now be transformed into the actual courseware by the programming groups.
